By Nearby 2.451 Comments

Today and tomorrow there is to be a lot of folk dancing in São Martinho. The event is the 20th Etnografia and Folclore (ethnography and folklore) festival.

At the stage built next to the civil parish building, this year’s edition of the festival starts tonight, setting off a month filled with a lot of culture and sports.

The civil parish of São Martinho keeps investing in culture, bringing to the city the roots of our common history, embroidered by songs and dances, with the performances – tonight – being by the folklore group of Casa do Povo da Ribeira Brava, followed by Ronda Típica do Carreço (Viana do Castelo), the Grupo Folclorico de Lapas (Torres Novas) and the Grupo Folclorico e Cultural da Casa do Povo de São Martinho.

From further afield, there’s the Folkloredanser group, but there will plenty more music to hear, today and tomorrow, in São Martinho. Starting at 20h00 (both days), with free admittance.

Meanwhile, at 21h, there’s a conference scheduled, entitled “The Madeira Ocean Observatory and Madeira’s Marine Biodiversity”, by Rui Caldeira, Claudia Ribeiro, Pedro Neves and Andreia Henriques.

If you are wondering what to do this Saturday, you can stop doing so. Especially because it is free… the return of the summer nights in São Martinho (Noites de Verão em São Martinho) is scheduled for July 22nd at 20h30, with the particular 4Litro version of fun.

A few good laughs is the civil parish’s bet, who also brings something else on stage, apart from the four comedians. It brings back a tradition lost in time…

To enliven the São Martinho evening in a party environment is what the parish team aims at, and with this aim it has also invited the Dul N’ Nouk White, with the great musical moments coming from the voice of Sandra Branco. They are one of the best Madeiran bands of the present, with a very wide musical spectrum, mainly in terms of covers.

Twenty years later, “Quinta do Bill” return to Santana, coming July 21st, this time to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The group, that became famous with the 1990’s hit “Os Filhos da Nação” will this time act in the new square of the northern town, in a free concert that is part of the Mostra Gastronomica (gastronomy fair) presently taking place there. From 22h00, the band of Carlos Moises, Paulo Bizarro, Carlos Calado, Dalila Marques, Jorge Costa and Miguel Urbano presents a few of their most recent songs, as well as – inevitably – some of their better-known themes.

Created in 1987, Quinta do Bill has launched 8 original albuns, and is responsible for some unforgettable songs, like “Os Filhos da Nação”, “Se Te Amo”, “Voa” and “No Trilho do Sol”.
