Porto Santo receives 800 this weekend

Porto Santo is packed this weekend, with various social and sports events taking place there.

29204649412_9d9d3559ce_zThe fact that the “reborn” 1st of November public holiday is on a Tuesday allowed many Madeirans to enjoy a long weekend with a single day of holidays, plus the fact that low season tickets for residents now cost 20 euro meant a change in behaviours, unforeseen earlier in the year.

Be that as it may, the weekend is sure to be busy (for this time of the year) in the island where the final touches are being made on the film “Perdidos”, by Leonel Viaira, and where Hotel Torre Praia is just getting ready to close during the low season, which has been happening for a number of years. This year, for the first time since the Grupo Sousa hotels close during the winter, the Praia Dourada is to remain open, at least until early January.

With military exercises taking place in Porto Santo, with elements from all branches of the Portuguese armed services, the numbers point to some 800 people being transported today to Porto Santo.

The fact is that this year is to be the first winter with the low season extra low fare means that it has become affordable for hundreds of people to go and spend a weekend in Porto Santo. After the public subsidy is paid, ticket price is as low as 20 euro.

This winter will be the first full season in which this subsidy applies, this having been drawn to fight seasonality in Porto Santo, which has been consistently softened by the changes in Madeirans’ habits – to enjoy holidays earlier and later than was usually the case, as even as recently ago as 10 to 15 years Porto Santo was a place where one would go to only in August…
