The building was always part of my memories, to a large extent due to the efforts of a fantastic History teacher who took us there.

In this sseason, in what is almost a tradition, the palace is more open than usual, and there is almost a formal invitation for the population to visit it, taking advantage of the organization of cultural events there.

On December 14th there’s the first of these events, with the Stimme choir, as well as the Orfeão Madeirense. Starting at 19h at the salão nobre.

On the 27th there’ll be the performance of a Madeiran guitar player, Francisco Lopes. Also in the salão nobre, also at 19h.

Finally, to close the cycle, there a performance by the choir of Casa do Povo da Camacha, to take place on January 5th, also at the salão nobre but at 19h30.

Access to these events is free, but limited to 75 people by the size of the room used.

Christmas masses start this week

If you are still planning your week, put up the first Christmas mass in your agenda. The novenas to the Child Jesus, the catholic name for the celebrations that traditionally attract so many Madeirans, start in the early morning of December 15th, in some parishes, or 16th, in most of the island’s parishes. Despite the fact that these traditions go back to the early settling of the island, they didn’t always fascinate people as they do in the early 21st century, with huge crowds going to the churches – or, more precisely, to the forecourt of the churches.

Because it’s not only the mass. There’s the band, frequently singing, firecrackers, and the lighting of the church and its environs, with all the liveliness which is actually what people seek, around rather than in the churches. There are also the feasts where emigrants, after getting rich abroad, promise to pay all the expenses of the novenas – but usually those that get up early for the masses, the first act in the Madeiran Christmas, don’t even know about this.

Just like in the summer, Madeirans go to the most famous and popular masses, and spread candid pictures of the events, day after day, in the social networks, creating their own novenas of pictures and ponchas and liqueurs that they had – even before they started working.

Christmas, nativity scenes and liqueurs

We do yet know who is to win the contest, but what we do know is that the nativity scenes resulting from it will be shown in the Centro de Ciência Viva (Porto Moniz sea front) from December 11th to January 6th.

We also know that the visit will be worth it, and that nativity scenes are not only a sign of people’s faith, but also of their ingenuity, and also of a region’s traditions.

In this context, take the opportunity to go to Porto Moniz. The opening will be on the 11th from 17h, and as an added bonus, there will be traditional Christmas Carrols, as well as a tasting of homemade liqueurs.

Floating New Year’s eve

One of the most sought after venues for watching the fireworks display in Funchal is the ferry Lobo Marinho.

Pergunta2Navio

This year, the ship will open its doors in three distinct timings, the first one being the dinner for 250 people.

The welcome cocktail is always followed by a luxurious meal, at 260 euro for adults and 130 euro for children, in a glamorous environment that has had its faithful for many years. If the option is merely to watch the fireworks, one can board from 22h30, joining the other passengers, for 135 euro for adults and 67,5 for children. There are 765 places on board for this possibility. And there will still be 79 places for after the return to the harbor where, just like in previous years, one can enjoy life music with Cristina Barbosa, Vania Banganho, OIDogs and DJ Sil.

There’s an open bar all through the night for all those aboard, despite the fact that those boarding before the fireworks are entitled to a late supper after 02h30, and open bar all through the firt eve of the year.

Of course, this is the liveliest party in Madeira, but Porto Santo Line is aware that people aren’t all on board at the same time, which makes the venue an attractive alternative for the party marking the beginning of the New Year in Madeira.

The fact is that allying the symbolism of the date with the unique venue that Lobo Marinho is, giving oje a unique view of the fireworks, this should always be an option when choosing the place in which to spend the night of December 31st.

Imagine, forty years later, being able to see the newspapers of the Autonomy, with exactly forty different examples, of dailies, weeklies and even monthlies, published between 1976 and 2016, that made our history in the last four decades.

The collection is part of the Museu de Imprensa da Madeira, in Camara de Lobos, and has been shown elsewhere in Madeira, namely the Assembleia Legislativa (local parliament), in Funchal, and the Casa da Cultura, in Santa Cruz.

Lourenço Freitas, a former journalist and now director of the Museu de Imprensa will present the exhibit tomorrow, but until December 16th, especially if you live in the east of the island, one can visit the paper-shaped history of our Autonomy. The forty newspapers will be expecting you in the temporary exhibits room at the Solar do Ribeirinho, in Machico, from tomorrow at 17h30.

Cultural week in Ilha

Meanwhile, the Solar do Ribeirinho has actually “left” its normal address, in Machico, and can be visited at Ilha, in Santana, at the Casa do Povo, as part of the 22nd cultural week, taking place until next December 4th.

The exhibit, entitled “À Descoberto do Solar do Ribeirinho – Nucleo Museológico de Machico” aims to be a teaser of this small museum, with a sample of the main references of this structure, where one can find the stories of the people who built Machico, through its six hundred years of history, spread over four rooms.

The exhibit, which can be visited until the coming Sunday, shows the importance of investing in culture and history, and of valuing our past.

The market is out on the square. Explaining, as promised the market has, for the second consecutive year, left the boundaries of the building and “went” to the town square, a Funchal council initiative.

Set up in a tent in the part of the square closest to the council building, the “market” will remain there until next Friday, visible in a spot visited by many hundreds of locals and visitors every day.

Sweets, preserved fruits and other delicacies that would tempt a saint are there for you, in the town square, where yesterday students of the secondary course of Escola de Dança do Funchal made the opening more memorable.

“Dançando com a Diferença” plays Dez Mil Seres

By Nearby One Comment

“I look for the first time and I se a plain pattern, repetitive, limited. I look closer, and see with more detail, I access a mysterious place where I find other shapes, an infinite number of variations. I see the detail, the cut, the filigree that emits its inner light. I takes time, patience, space, calm and the very will to see…

Now, already within this other place, I find strange beings that complete actions that only imagination can make sense of”.

dez-mil-seres

These words are from choreographer Clara Andermatt and will be accompanied by the sound of Jonas Runa on the play “Dez Mil Seres (Ten Thousand Beings)” which will be presented by “Dançando com a Diferença” from November 18th at the Funchal city theatre.

The artistic direction of this “must go” in your agenda is, again, Henrique Amoedo, the man who created this group and that one day made people with differences dream, and make their dreams come true.

Priced at 3 euro (for children up to six years of age) and 5 euro for all others, the shows will take place on Friday November 18th, for schools, at 10h and 15h, Saturday, 19th, at 19h30, and Sunday, 20th, at 18h, for all others.
