Imagine, forty years later, being able to see the newspapers of the Autonomy, with exactly forty different examples, of dailies, weeklies and even monthlies, published between 1976 and 2016, that made our history in the last four decades.

The collection is part of the Museu de Imprensa da Madeira, in Camara de Lobos, and has been shown elsewhere in Madeira, namely the Assembleia Legislativa (local parliament), in Funchal, and the Casa da Cultura, in Santa Cruz.

Lourenço Freitas, a former journalist and now director of the Museu de Imprensa will present the exhibit tomorrow, but until December 16th, especially if you live in the east of the island, one can visit the paper-shaped history of our Autonomy. The forty newspapers will be expecting you in the temporary exhibits room at the Solar do Ribeirinho, in Machico, from tomorrow at 17h30.

Cultural week in Ilha

Meanwhile, the Solar do Ribeirinho has actually “left” its normal address, in Machico, and can be visited at Ilha, in Santana, at the Casa do Povo, as part of the 22nd cultural week, taking place until next December 4th.

The exhibit, entitled “À Descoberto do Solar do Ribeirinho – Nucleo Museológico de Machico” aims to be a teaser of this small museum, with a sample of the main references of this structure, where one can find the stories of the people who built Machico, through its six hundred years of history, spread over four rooms.

The exhibit, which can be visited until the coming Sunday, shows the importance of investing in culture and history, and of valuing our past.
