Nine débuts in Funchal harbour

By Nearby One Comment

Funchal harbour was always a stopping point for many travelers. Last century, with the development of the cruise industry, it became a important stopover for many shipping companies. Just last year, the harbour received over 724 thousand passengers and crew, divided by 294 arrivals. British and German tourists were – again – the most numerous. But ships tended to be smaller than on previous years. For this year, there are already over 300 bookings, which will certainly bring in more passengers, especially as there are 12 first-timers. Most os these come to Funchal for the first time, but three just changed names: TUI Discovery (former Splendour of the Seas), TUI Discovery 2 (ex Legend of the Seas) and Columbus (ex Pacific Pearl), return under a new guise, on May 2nd, September 28th and May 20th, respectively.

But there are also ships that have never been here. Especially for those who love ships, here are the dates:

March 5th – “Viking Star”.

March 30th – “Soleal”,

April 10th –  “Midnatsol”

April 20th – “Mein Schiff 5”

May 23rd – “Monarch”

November 10th –  Norwegian Star”,

November 13th – “AIDAprima”

November 28th  – “Veendam”

December 10th – “MSC Seaside”

Tattoos as embroidery. In São Martinho

The civil parish of São Martinho wants to dismiss taboos. The idea of Duarte Caldeira Ferreira, the president of one of the most populous civil parishes in Funchal and his team is to develop, in the coming months, two initiatives that can make youngsters and the less young see what going on around them with different eyes.

The team’s idea is to dismiss prejudices with urban art. They are contacting tattoo parlours, trying to obtain patterns applied on people, so as to work them so as to be adapted to Madeira embroidery and tapestry. The works, once completed, can then be used for an exhibit.

The intention is to make clear that the design originates in a tattoo, which is why it’s part of the plans to show the picture of the body where the original work was applied next to the mural, as well as the process the drawings went through.

Another innovating idea is related to graffiti. The parish has contacted various artists asking them to prepare a design to apply on a portable mural, instead of a wall. These artists, besides painting the graffiti, are also to reach a number of elderly residents the techniques, with which they are to cooperate in the process.

The intention is that the graffiti mural is painted during the commemoration of the parish day, March 3rd. The ultimate aim is to allow youth to appreciate Madeira embroidery and tapestry, as well as to allow the elderly to look upon tattoos as a form of art, and for all to see garfitti as a form of art rather than simple urban pollution.

Tomorrow is the “panelo” day, in the gorgeous village Seixal, Porto Moniz. For many Madeirans, this event is the closing feature of the Christmas celebrations.
This family and friends event is a social meeting fulfilled for many generations by inhabitants of the parish and the council, and always takes place at Chão da Ribeira.
The panelo, turned through the times into a social event, is a meal made on a base of vegetables, meats and hams, a sort of giant Portuguese style stew, served on table cloth put onto tables brought outside from the many stalls and sheds that are to be found in Chão da Ribeira.
This year the calendar has dictated that the event is to take place on January 29th, with many heading north – with a healthy appetite to match the size and quality of the offerings.
