To do and to see – Porto Moniz

The fort of St John the Baptist, in Porto Moniz, was built in the 18th century. It’s goal was to protect the village from pirates. Wiith the passing of time, it fell into disrepair, and into disuse, and when the council acquired it it was little more than a ruin.

What remained of the outer walls was preserved, and the stones around it were used to give it back its original shape.

After the reconstruction works, started in 2000, its interior was used to house the aquarium of Madeira – and the building thus deserves a visit for two different reasons: by the way in which it shows the fauna of the islands’ sea, and by the way it highlights this small jewel…
