The Jesuit College and the church of St John the Evangelist

It is worth visiting both the church of St John the Evangelist, better known as the Colégio church, or the Jesuit church, and the building presently occupied by the University of Madeira (UMa).

The church is a remarkable example of mannerist architecture, and is special due to balance of its façade, its imposing interiors and the paintings and tiles with which it was decorated. Don’t forget a visit to the tower, which allows for a different outlook on the center of the city and its bay.

In what concerns the Colégio itself, it has served many purposes. Built in the late 16th century, it was used as a base for the scholarly and religious activities of the Jesuits. Many of its users were linked to teaching, but it was also used by military units as a barracks (both for Portuguese and British units).

One can take part in guided visits to both these buildings, both in English and in Portuguese. Those interested should contact Gaudeamus, in the entrance of the Jesuits’ College, at rua dos ferreiros. It costs 5 euro, and takes place onm Friday for the church (at 14h00 and 15h30) and Saturday for the Colégio (11h00, 12h30 and 14h30).

The funds thus collected will be used to finance the social functions of UMa’s Students Association (AAUMa): the Food Scholarships, a fund that has furnished thousands of meals to the poorer UMa students, and the School Scholarship, geared towards school supplies, books and equipment.

Gaudeamus can be reached by phone (291705060) and email (colegio@aauma.pt).
