NRP Tejo will spend the New Year in Madeira. The ship, which is to arrive next week (tentative ETA is December 29th) will start a new trend in the vigilance of Madeira’s EEZ.

In a land of tourism, and which has become increasingly attractive for yachts, the use of this type of equipment will generate an improved image for the island, for instance, in terms of SAR (search and rescue).

After having seen the sturdy Cacina class ships, built over forty years ago, and a brief passage by NPO Viana do Castelo, this Stanflex patrol boat will mean a dramatic improvement in the quality of services rendered, namely in the support of Madeira’s natural park, and the local Policia Maritima detachment, in their trips to the Selvagens.

NRP Tejo is commanded by 1st Lieutenant Robalo Franco, who has a good knowledge of the seas of the archipelago after various missions in Madeira as second in command to NRP Zaire, in 2007, and NRP Viana do Castelo.

It will thus be easy for him to command this 54 meter long GRP ship, with 345 tons and a range of 2400 miles. Speeds of 14 knots can be attained on one engine, 20 on two and 30 with gas turbines.

NRP Tejo bears pennant number P590, has a crew of 23 (3 officers, 4 NCOs and 16 enlisted), and is to stay in Madeira for three months.
