Navy has already released corvette to be sunk in Cabo Girão

The Portuguese navy has withdrawn from its active ships’ list the “Batista de Andrade” class corvette NRP Afonso Sequeira, that will in the future be part of a new dive spot next to Cabo Girão.

A note published in Portugal’s official newspaper, considers the project presented by the local government, through the secretaria regional do Ambiente e Recursos Naturais as being of public interest, in the areas of recovery and preservation of maritime resources, of sub aquatic tourism, cultural and historic preservation, protection of marine life and the local economy. In this context, and as there is the intention of applying for EU funding as a means of protecting and developing submarine flora and fauna, the corvette will be given the same treatment as given to general Pereira d’Eça, sunk in July in the waters off Porto Santo.

All this because Madeira has as a goal the creation of an artificial reef and underwater museum, a project considered of public interest, for scientific, economic, cultural, environmental and touristic reasons, and because this will bring added value both for the country as a whole and Madeira in special.
