Funchal’s accessibility one step ahead

Funchal is still one step ahead in terms of accessibility. The Funchal council has added another award, issued by “Itinirerários Turísticos Acessiveis de Portugal” (Portugal Accessible Tourism Routes).

But this isn’t all. Funchal has simultaneously received the key to tnter a national pilot project, led by Turismo de Portugal, who created an accessible route in the VisitPortugal site. At the same time, the council has also received the flag of the Cities and Villages of Excellence (RCVE).

Already last November the European Commission granted Funchal the “2017 Accessible City” prize, one of seven in Europe, and this despite the obviously difficult layout of the city.

For Funchal mayor Paulo Cafofo, “this is a further recognition of the work that has been developed in terms of accessibility and inclusion over the last three years. It has been a structuring work, branching into different areas like urban planning, transport, infrastructure and equipments and tourism, and the efforts were also recognized at a European level”. The awarding of the prize and the flag took place at the council on January 9th.

The mayor stated that “we defined as a strategic priority to make the city more accessible and more inclusive, and it is with obvious pride that the results are clear for all. Funchal wants to be a reference for inclusive tourism, and we apply the rule that a good tourism offer has to be based on a sustainable territory for its inhabitants”.
