Funchal’s mayor, Paulo Cafofo, was present at the first hoisting of the three distinctions the city received last year.

The Funchal council received the prizes for being Portugal’s More Family-Friendly council, granted by Associação Portuguesa das Familias Numerosas, as well as the Eco XX1, by Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa, and Cidade de Excelência (City of Excellence), by the Instituto de Cidades e Vilas com Mobilidade.

Paulo Cafofo didn’t hide his pride, and wanted to explain the base of each of the prizes. The first one, for More Family-Friendly council, was granted by Associação Portuguesa de Familias Numerosas. Last year, which is the one the prize refers to, there were 58 recognized councils, even though only 37 were given the prize of excellence, with palm, which is given only to the councils that have received the prize for three consecutive years, as is the case of Funchal.

In terms of environment, and after having attained this for the first time in 2015, the Funchal council was given the Green Flag of Eco XXI for the second time. The programme is promoted by Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa, and aims at marking those councils with good environmental practices, based on “the monitoring of values relating to environmental education and sustainability, quality of air and water, urban planning, noise, waste management, cleanliness and public spaces, amongst others, which make Funchal an example”, said the mayor.

Finally, Funchal was also given, and for the very first time, an Accessibility Certificate, granted by Instituto de Cidades e Vilas com Mobilidade, as part of Portugal’s Accessible Touristic Routes. With the certificate also comes the continuation of the use of the flag of the Cidades e Vilas de Excelência (Cities and Villages of Excellence) network and the inclusion of Funchal in a national pilot project, led by Turismo de Portugal, that created an accessible route of the city in the VisitPortugal site. The choice of Funchal for an accessible route in the said portal is based on the recognition of the work and planning made by the council in terms of accessibilities for people with reduced mobility.
