Council finances market facelift

The expected cost is around 170 thousand euro, but in a couple of months the city will see the benefits of a multifaceted facelift which is to be undertaken in the city market.

The Funchal council is preparing a facelift to all the façades of the market, but also the flower sellers stalls, and to value the historic identity and the heritage of the main market of the city. The improvements, which are to take place both in and out of the market, are the final step of this council’s effort towards revitalizing the city’s markets.

First comes the requalification of the façades, preserving the original layout of the 1940 building, a symbol of Estado Novo architecture. The building was designed by Edmundo Tavares, who also designed the local branch of the Banco de Portugal (Portugal’s issuing bank) and the Liceu Jaime Moniz, amongst others.

The council adds the the medium and long term goals for the markets are the continued improvements in the services, more and better certification, a diversification of the offers and the preservation of the structure historic design.
