Council’s tourism information office received eighty thousand tourists

By Our Islands 34 Comments

“A welcoming city, that receives with excellence all that visit it”. This is how the Funchal mayor classifies the city, and justifies the existence of a tourism information centre run by the council.

And all this because through the last months, since its opening in October 2016, the new information centre, in the Funchal seafront, has already received eighty thousand people – more than three hundred per day.

Paulo Cafofo, the mayor, speaks of an undeniable impact (…) which confirms the reasons for our bet in a setup with these characteristics. Funchal has greatly benefitted from the creation of this additional information centre, thus contributing for the creation of the image of a welcoming city, that receives with excellence all that visit it”.

Through the eight months it has operated, and taking into account the average ten thousand visitors per month, it was possible to design the profile of the visitor: 45 percent is between 45 and 64 years of age, and 30 percent is over 65. British prevail (38 percent), followed by Germans (18 percent) and other northern European visitors (8 percent together). From the people questioned, ninety percent travel accompanied, amd they mostly fly into the island, where they spend between four and seven days (47 percent) or for longer periods (34 percent).

In the city, they mostly stress the friendliness of the people, the diversity of cultural offerings, gastronomy and nature, which are all important elements that will assist Funchal in remaining a differentiated destination within the tourism markets.

The tourism office has received people from 49 different nationalities.

Council finances market facelift

By Our Islands 719 Comments

The expected cost is around 170 thousand euro, but in a couple of months the city will see the benefits of a multifaceted facelift which is to be undertaken in the city market.

The Funchal council is preparing a facelift to all the façades of the market, but also the flower sellers stalls, and to value the historic identity and the heritage of the main market of the city. The improvements, which are to take place both in and out of the market, are the final step of this council’s effort towards revitalizing the city’s markets.

First comes the requalification of the façades, preserving the original layout of the 1940 building, a symbol of Estado Novo architecture. The building was designed by Edmundo Tavares, who also designed the local branch of the Banco de Portugal (Portugal’s issuing bank) and the Liceu Jaime Moniz, amongst others.

The council adds the the medium and long term goals for the markets are the continued improvements in the services, more and better certification, a diversification of the offers and the preservation of the structure historic design.

To do and to see – Porto Moniz

By Our Islands 2.375 Comments

The fort of St John the Baptist, in Porto Moniz, was built in the 18th century. It’s goal was to protect the village from pirates. Wiith the passing of time, it fell into disrepair, and into disuse, and when the council acquired it it was little more than a ruin.

What remained of the outer walls was preserved, and the stones around it were used to give it back its original shape.

After the reconstruction works, started in 2000, its interior was used to house the aquarium of Madeira – and the building thus deserves a visit for two different reasons: by the way in which it shows the fauna of the islands’ sea, and by the way it highlights this small jewel…

Santana to Funchal

By Our Islands 364 Comments

It’s not quite 35 kilometres but, not having completed them, I believe they’ll seem more. Not so much by the ups and downs of the route, but especially by all they allow us to see, in terms of landscapes, history, culture and vegetation.

Ancient Caminho Real nr 24 (Royal Route) starts in Santana, at Cova da Roda. From there it goes through Lombo Galego, Fajã da Murta, Cruzinhas (700 metres), Fajã Grande de Baixo, Ribeira da Metade, Achada do Cedro Gordo, Ribeiro Frio, Chão das Feiteiras, Poiso (1400 metres, the highest point on the route), Ribeira das Cales, Terreiro da Luta (900 metres), Monte (550 metres) and Portas da Cidade.

Those who already used the road leaving Funchal through Monte to Poiso will certainly have seen, here and there, the remains of a cobbled route. It is clearly visible when leaving Terreiro da Luta, and later immediately after Poiso, and one crosses it a number of times until Ribeiro Frio.

The Royal Route was the logical route, over land, for those travelling from the North (São Jorge to Faial), to Funchal.  An alternative, for those who had the means to do so, would be to take the boat, starting from one of the small harbours on the coast, but especially the one at Ribeira de São Jorge, to proceed to the capital.

Today, and besides all the stops one can enjoy along the route, don’t miss the laurisilva, in the valley of Ribeiro Frio. Go off the route to visit Balcões. Visit the monument to Our Lady of Peace, in Terreiro da Luta. And take the opportunity to go up to the tower of the church of Monte, already on the way into the city. In Poiso one can stop, for some rest and recreation, to warm up, and to continue, towards the city or Santana, depending on which way one is going.

Here and there there will be impassable stretches, covered by vegetation, or cut by new roads. But it is always possible to go around these obstacles, and go on on one’s way.

Good walking!

Some gardens actually have taste, right?

Funchal mayor Paulo Cafofo didn’t want to miss the “Jardins dos Sabores” (Gardens with Tastes) project, now on its fourth edition.

The event, bringing together gastronomy and culture, and jointly organized by the Funchal council, the São Martinho civil parish and FrenteMar Funchal, is to take place in the Lido gardens from June 14th to 18th.

The three previous editions were, according to the mayor, a success, gathering music, art, food and the gardens, as well as a kids’ area, created to allow parents to enjoy the event without worrying abouts their siblings.
