Madeira’s “Young People Concerts”

By Nearby 13 Comments

Do you think you have a Mozart at home? Well, its time to get rid of the doubts, and take your child – if she is under seven years old – to hear some music.

Next March 4th, a Saturday, starting at 10h30, the Funchal council presents, in a co-production with Companhia B-á-bá da Musica, a different show, traveling “The world of sounds” (Pelo Mundo dos Sons).

This is a fun and educational musical, dedicated to the youngest – both small kids and babies – that is to take place in one of the side rooms of the Teatro.

The project originates in the need of this type of events, but also from the way children’s access to concerts is restricted, which means kids have an excellent chance of having a moment that is especially dedicated to them. The proposal points towards a visit to the sounds of Europe and through the beauty of cultural diversity.

Tickets cost three euro, including free access to one or two adults per child.

The ”Guerrillas” return

Between 1955 and 1974 the Funchal downtown would be “flooded”, in carnival, by the unmistakeable sounds of the Banda Distrital do Funchal (Funchal district band). It was a time in which all the members of the “guerrillas” would disguise themselves for the musical parade, and would then proceed to the band building, to support the coming party.

This year, the Funchal council is recovering this tradition from the ancient carnival parades, especially the band, which has scheduled a concert that is to take place next February 26th, a Sunday, in the Teatro, Tickets have a symbolic price of 2 euro, and the proceeds will be used to acquire a new instrument for the band.

All those aged under six will have free admission.

The present “Brilliant Guerrilas” will also have an exhibit in the foyer of the Teatro Municipal Baltasar Dias, that will bring back memories of the events in which they participated in the years between 1955 and 1974, especially those glorious parades so many still remember.

The Madeira whaling museum will present, coming February 20th, at 16h00, the new image of its merchandising shop.

Placed in a new area within the museum, the shop is a pleasant space where one can find exclusive products with its own designs and brands, with the profits generated contributing to the conservation and study of whales and dolphins of the archipelago.

The name of the shop, ALAMAR, is an expression used by locals connected to the fishing industry, when referring to the notion of being some distance away from the coast. In this specific case, the expression comes from an interview conducted with an ancient whaler, Mr Manuel Moreira, by the present director of the museum, Ana Nóbrega.

Museu de Imprensa – Madeira (in Camara de Lobos) has presently an exhibit dedicated to the fifty years of Comercio do Funchal, entitled  “o jornal cor de rosa” (the pink newspaper), made out of over a hundred copies of this weekly that was one of the main opposition newspaper during the Portuguese dictatorship (ended in 1974).

In January 1st 1967 Comercio do Funchal appeared with a new “face”, with changed in its graphic layout and even in the colour of the paper used, it came up with new subjects and new ideas, educating public opinion on the importance of the debate of ideas and the free expression, the need to criticize, denounce and inform with greater accuracy. Comercio do Funchal went around the censorship, affirmed freedom of speech and is still remembered as one of the main newspapers in the opposition to the dictatorship of Oliveira Salazar and Marcelo Caetano.

MIM Museu de Imprensa Madeira is part of the council of Camara de Lobos, is the sole print museum of the Atlantic isles, and gathers some forty printing machines and a considerable historic heritage associated to the area of the press and since its opening, in September 2013, has organized over ten temporary exhibits.

Godfather, godmother is arriving

By Nearby 563 Comments

Carnival starts in Madeira this week. While the urban troupes rehearse their rhythms, in Santana the tune is played differently, and the music is more akin to those played in previous times. Social and political satire, the truth is that more and more Madeirans visit the northern town to see the godfather and godmother pass by, on their way to their “final judgement”, in the afternoon of coming Sunday, starting at 16h30.

Starting on Thursday, the godparents will be coming out, to start the carnival festivities in Madeira. It is a traditional celebration which has been held for many decades, with many unique and genuine moments that gather hundreds of people. There are to be fireworks at 12h00 and the meeting of the godmothers at 19h00.

Saturday night there’ll be plenty of music, including the pair Lucas & Matheus, and on Sunday, starting at 14h00, the compadres and comadres will walk the streets of the town.

Plan to go there, see one of the major cultural events in Madeira, take your sense of humour and a warm jacket, and enjoy yourself a mere thirty minutes from Funchal.

St Valentine’s in Machico will have na extra flavour. A local author will present a book of poetry, entitled “Poesia no farol” (poetry at the lighthouse).

Rosa Mendonça Franco, the author, will present her book at Solar do Ribeirinho – Nucelo Museologico de Machico, in a session that is to start at 17h30.

The book is the consequence of her deciding to put her poetry into writing, a very sensitive. Almost autobiographical kind of writing relating to episodes and people in her life.
