Wood fairies charm in Machico

By Nearby 2.227 Comments

March 24th, this coming Friday, Fórum Machico receives the show “Les Sylphides”, starting at 21h30.

The ballet has as scenery a wood, where a young dreamer is surrounded by dancing fairies. The choreography, created by Foikine, was first used in a show produced by Sergey Diaghilev for the Ballet Russes, in Paris, in 1909, and doesn’t really try to convey a story, the idea being more to recreate an ambiance.

The Madeiran version is a production of ADAM (Associação de Dança e Arte da Madeira), with elements from ADAM (Funchal, Porto da Cruz and Santana) as well as the Conservatório – Escola professional das Artes da Madeira, following a protocol signed by the two entities, thus allowing students from the courses of the Conservatório to take part in the show.

The choreographies, by Sergey Abakumov, Isabel Santos, Leandro Rodrigues, Yury Rykunov and Dalila Rodrigues should be seen as a space of different influences, not only in the sense that there are two institutions taking part, but also because it is a mix of both classic and contemporary dancing.

Tickets can be acquired at the Forum Machico ticket booth in the hour before the show, costing 10 euro, with 50 percent discounts for seniors and students.

The show was produced with the support of DRAC, Secretaria Regional de Cultura, Turismo e Transportes, the Funchal city council, the Conservatório – Escola Profissional das Artes and artists Diamantino Jesus and Zé Diogo DiDiarte. It is worth going to the Forum Machico, as this is sure to be a different experience.

If you don’t know the answer to this question, there is a place, quite near, where you can enjoy all the beauty of the north shore of Madeira and still do a sort o scientific tourism.

Did you know, for instance, that you can take a cable car ride and visit the parish of Achadas da Cruz, where you will find a kind of rural environment that persists in very few places on the island?

The natural swimming pools, the picnics, all the open air activities, camping, good food, the Porto Moniz sea front, the aquarium, the science centre, are but a few of the attractions offered by the four civil parishes that make out ehat council. But there is more. The well known natural swimming pools start to be an option when the weather heats up a bit, but if that is not your thing you can always take your family for a walk, of which there are plenty – and safe – that can be scheduled for the coming Easter holidays.

We’ll be leaving further suggestions here, for Easter or for a weekend, now that Spring had finally arrived…

The anniversary of the Funchal Theatre will be closed in a grand manner. The programme ends with the play “As barrigas também têm dentro”, by Teatro Feiticeiro do Norte, an intimist show, on stage, from texts by Manuel Antonio Pina (a reference in children’s literature), with Elvio Camacho and Paula Erra.

The play’s synopsis is thus presented by the actors: a few moments of the life of a kindergarten teacher and an actor doing an audition, little more. “For adults, if seen by adults, for children if seen by children”. As barrigas também têm dentro “is perhaps one of the last chances of doing youth theatre. We no longer move as we used to. We like to play what we are”.

Which means it is probably better to go and enjoy this opportunity to see these two Madeiran actors.
