Restoration works in the vaults of two chapels in the Machico church have yielded large ceramic pieces, including at least one sugar mould. The pieces, according to RTP reports, go back to the 16th century, and were hidden within the mortar, and are remarkably intact.

They were found within the roof vault of the Espirito Santo chapel, presently being rebuilt.

The restoration works, valued at some 160 thousand euro, aim at recovering the two chapels, whose vaults were in need of repairs. One of them (over the Teixeiras chapel) is unique in Madeira, as it was built with bricks, rather than stone.
