Jazz collective at the Teatro

Tomorrow, June 28th, there is more than marches going  through the night.

Do you want to organize contemporary art exhibits?

The Funchal city theatre receives a workshop on contemporary art curatorship this week, entitled “planning and organizing exhibits: the role of the curator”.

Organized by the cultural management company Antiframe, the meeting on June 27th and 28th is another effort of the council in terms of cultural coaching, very much in line with what has taken place over the last years. This course has been taught in Porto (September), Lisbon (November), and is now in Funchal.

The workshop is made out of four modules, with the goal of giving participants the theoretical and practical bases on how to organize a contemporary art exhibit. It is to be made out of two days of intensive coaching, from 10h00 to 19h00, and will be taught by cyrator Claudia Camacho, a master in History of Art.

Families’ dance show this weekend

“Dançando com a diferença” will perform today, June 24th, at 21h00, and tomorrow, June 25th, at 17h00, at the Funchal city theatre, the show “Ceci n’est pas un film” – duet for an apple and an egg, by choreographer Paulo Ribeiro.

In this multi faceted show, mixing dancing and video on stage, seeking the rewriting of love, interpreted by dancers Ana Jezabel and João Cardoso, who will perform the roles of two lovers.

Duet for an apple and an egg is a family performance, aimed at all dance lovers, and at all the families that want to initiate their youngsters in the appreciation of this artistic genre.

There are multiple family packs available, especially designed for the younger ones and their families:

General public – 7,5 euro

Children up to 12 – 5 euro

Family pack – (2 adults + 1 child) – 15 euro

Estrada Monumental being requalified

Responding to its users’ inputs, but also to its own observations, the Funchal council has started the requalification works of the stretch of Estrada Monumental between the Lido and the Ribeiro Seco bridge.

Traffic is to proceed in a single direction (west to east) for the duration of the works, which include repaving the road but also the relaying of all the infrastructure under the pavement.

The Council is aware of the disturbance that works of this magnitude cause in people’s lifes, but it is also aware of the urgent need to repair this road, one of the major thoroughfares of the city, a need which is also a consequence of the many tourist busses that constantly use it.

Environmental week in Funchal

Various initiatives mark the environmental week, taking place in Funchal.

Various conferences, a route guide, and the presentation of a book, it’s goal is to increase environmental’s conscience towards nature and its – which is ours – welfare.

The environmental week also includes the presentation of a book, dedicated to the Selvagens and its wardens. Written by Cristina Costa e Silva the book is the result of a very close relationship she established with these small islands, over more than a decade. To take place on Thursday, at 18h00, at the Funchal council.

Marches tomorrow at Penteada

The Penteada market receives today and tomorrow, the commemoration of the Santos Populares (popular saints), its biggest cultural event of the year, in this space which the Funchal council has been revitalizing for the past years. The highlight of these commemorations is to take place tomorrow, June 16th, with the traditional São João marches, from 20h00 to 00h00.

The marches will gather some 400 hundred users of the municipal gymnasiums of São Martinho, Santo António and Barreirinha, of the various community centres run by SocioHabita Funchal, the Monte casa do povo, hospital João de Almada and Associação Cultural e Recreativa do Galeão, to which there is to be added musical entertainment and the tasting of traditional delicacies. To take place until Sunday.

Some gardens actually have taste, right?

Funchal mayor Paulo Cafofo didn’t want to miss the “Jardins dos Sabores” (Gardens with Tastes) project, now on its fourth edition.

The event, bringing together gastronomy and culture, and jointly organized by the Funchal council, the São Martinho civil parish and FrenteMar Funchal, is to take place in the Lido gardens from June 14th to 18th.

The three previous editions were, according to the mayor, a success, gathering music, art, food and the gardens, as well as a kids’ area, created to allow parents to enjoy the event without worrying abouts their siblings.

Museums and controversial stories at the Solar do Ribeirinho

The International Museum Day will be commemorated this Thursday, May 18th, and will this year be dedicated to the theme “Museums and controversial stories: to say the unspeakable in museums”.

The Machico council, through Solar do Ribeirinho – Machico Museum Nuclei, will promote, at 10h30 and 11h30, for schoolchildren, the activity “Let’s recreate our aqueduct”, with pupils from the Barquinho kindergarten. The activity is to take place within the exhibit “Portuguese Aqueducts”, which is being shown in the museum.

On May 18th, from 09h00 to 17h00, entries will be free.
