The stages of MADEIRADiG have already received some of the best known musicians in the electronic and experimental types throughout the world, like Ben Frost, William Basinski, Supersilent, Alva Noto or Tony Conrad, who passed away early in 2016.

For this year’s edition, there will names like Zeena Parkins and Sonic Boom, amongst others.

If you are one of the aficionados who don’t want to miss the events, tickets for this year’s edition are on sale at the festival website, at www.madeiradig.com, and will later be made available at the reception of Estalagem da Ponta do Sol and at Mudas – Museu de Arte Contemporanea da Madeira. ratinhas-722

Since last November 10th the Machico council has been showing, at the Solar do Ribeirinho, four instances of “ratinha” crockery, belonging to a private collector. The origine of this crockery is to be found in the 19th and early 20th century, when worker from the centre of the country moved to the Alentejo and Ribatejo to assist with the crops and other intensive agricultural tasks. They were known as “ratinhos”, and they would take pieces of crockery for their own use, for the duration of their stay, after which they would attempt to sell them in the South before heading back home. This crockery, mostly made out of large dishes, was characterized by their low price, the intensity of the colours and the shine of the glazing – it became known as the “ratinha” crockery.

The four pieces can be viewed at the Solar do Ribeirnho, very close to the centre of Machico.

Genesis Friday at the city theater

Friday November 11th you’ll be able to relive Phil Collins’ band best moments on stage at the Funchal city theatre.

genesis

The Genesis Piano Project, which will also perform in Ponta Delgada, Lisbon and Porto on the following days, is an idea brought to the stage by two American pianists who decided to adapt to the piano the great hits of Genesis, who sold 130 million albums throughout the world.

Even if the band in which Anthony Phillips, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks had became immortal  for those who hears it or saw it during the sixties, seventies or eighties, they still drag crowds, even though the name more frequently associated with genesis is, undoubtedly, Phil Collins, who stood in for Peter Gabriel sometime during the seventies.

Genesis van do without introductions. And they still draw crowds, even if on the piano by two Americans who, having tested the formula successfully in 2015, repeat the country and add the capitals of the two archipelagoes.

Don’t miss the opportunity of hearing the best of Genesis played by two pianists on a single acoustic concert, next Friday, November 11th, starting at 21h30.

You can also check out the project’s youtube channel.

The “Mercado sai à rua” programme (the market goes out and about), after a first experiment in 2015, returns to the town square, for those five days, to commemorate another anniversary of one of the most visited icons in Madeira’s capital.

Many Madeirans have regained the habit of going to the Mercado for their shopping, especially fruits and vegetables, not to mention fresh fruit and flowers.

More than a tourist attraction, the market is a place where traditions abound, all while appreciating many colours and tones spread over wicker baskets that are so typically a marker of our history and traditions.

Enjoy the market before it comes out on the street, but also go to praça do Municipio from November 21st to 25th.
