By Nearby 2.828 Comments

The Cidade do Açucar museum will on Friday receive its “last exhibit”, presented to the public at 18h00 during a talk entitled “Piece by piece we rehabilitate our heritage: the return of a counter a scriptorium”. Some of the museums exhibits were heavily damaged during the floods of 2010, with some pieces disappearing.

The item to be returned, entitled “counter”, was created in northern Europe workshops in the end of the 16th century and is part of the Funchal city council collection. Its complexity, in terms of materials and techniques employed, made its recovery slow and complicated.

This World Tourism Day is to commemorated in Funchal in various ways, with proposals for all tastes.

The Funchal council offers free visits to the city hall and to the Henrique e Francisco Franco and the Cidade do Açucar museums.

But there are two items on the council-suggested agenda that should not be missed: the presentation of a geodiversity route through the Funchal historic centre and the unveiling of the map “Funchal for Families”. The celebration will finish with the first edition of Fados at the farmers’ market, starting at 21h, an event open to all. It is thus so that the municipal tourism strategy, presented last year, is now fulfilled, and has made a positive contribution to qualify Funchal’s touristic product.

This is the third time that the department of economy and culture of the council celebrates World Tourism Day. Through the mandate, various relevant initiatives were developed, like the opening of the first council tourism information kiosk, at Praça do Povo, which had over 100 thousand visits in less than one year, the launch of a new council tourism site (VisitFunchal) and a city guide for mobile devices (JiTT.Travel Funchal).

Camping at the theatre this saturday

It’s a sort of “Night at the Museum”, but in a theatre version, and with no dinosaurs. The event allows youngsters to spend the night at the Theatre and listen to dramatized stories.

The initiative, promoted by APEL (Associação Portuguesa de Editores and Livreiros, Portuguese association of editors and book sellers) wants Funchal inhabitants – permanent or temporary – to join the “Acampar com Histórias” (camping with stories) with the same enthusiasm as children from many other places in Portugal, ever since 2015.

The intention is to make youngsters read more, by allowing them to discover the fabulous world of books, illustrations and writing.

The experience is to be enjoyed in the midst of “nature”, with the mediators transforming into heroes, and the story tellers becoming actors and directors, bringing the drama of a live and magical theatre “out” of the book. On September 30th

And tomorrow is the day for the homage due to Ana Margarida Falcão. Scheduled for 18h, at the formal hall of the city council, the homage will be done by the presentation of the fifth number of “Pensardiverso” magazine.

Ana Margarida Falcão, who developed a relevant work as a researcher and writer, was for many years a relevant figure in the Madeiran cultural scene, and beyond it, which justifies the homage paid to her by the Portuguese studies’ magazine of the University of Madeira.

This editorial project, recently integrated into the CIERL-UMa, aims at the scientific divulging of regional and international research in areas linked to visual arts, culture, philosophy, linguistics, literature, history and psychology, as part of the Portuguese speaking world.

Next Friday, September 22nd, all routes in Madeira will lead to Praça Colombo, in the Funchal city centre. At the “Cidade do Açucar” (City of Sugar) museum the highlights will be on culture and heritage, with the European journeys dedicated to these themes taking place there.

Heritage and nature is this year’s theme, with the aim being highlighting the relationship between people, communities, places and their history, showing how heritage and nature keep crossing in their different expressions, urban or rural, and to the need to preserve and invest on this relationship.

Starting at 10h, there are games for the youngest. For the elder there’s a conference (starting at 15h), with the day ending with the showing of the film “A Rota do Contrabando” (The Smuggler’s Route), by Eduardo Costa, starting at 18h.

With the beginning of the new school year, there is also the beginning of the second season of the “Baltasar Junior” educational Project, which aims at attracting the youngest to our most emblematic show room.

The day after tomorrow, September 15th, at 16h, the programme created in 2016 will be presented for this year’s season, and is set to diversify its educational offering so as to be able to reach a bigger audience.

But the news go beyond this. This new season “Junior” gets new resident partners: Teatro Experimental do Funchal, Feiticeiro do Norte, Associação Cultural Casa Invisivel and Associação Gato.

The idea of the people responsible for culture in Funchal is to go and find new publics, creating cultural habits. To increase the educational offer, with workshops and scripted visits with free admittance for schools is one of the strategies developed by that department of the Funchal council in the various areas present in the Teatro: text, backdrop, lighting, music and acting.

Let the new season begin!

The new artistic season has just been opened in the city theatre. There’s theatre, music, dancing, cinema, literary festivals, congresses, multiple items that will generate a lot of visitors to this Madeiran venue in the next coming months.

The programme was unveiled this last Friday (September 8th), with mayor Paulo Cafofo making a point of being present at the moment when the curtain is again raised on the stage where, until July, hundreds of artists will find their home away from home.

It was actually in this way that Sandra Nóbrega, the director of the Theatre, referred to the venue, where some fifty workers work every day to make it “the” venue for art in Madeira.

Proud of the numbers, Paulo Cafofo remembered the almost fifty thousand people that occupied the seats of the Theatre last year, and wished for an even more successful season this time round.
