The “Serrada da Velha” tradition will again be kept this year in Lombada, Ponta Delgada. With its roots in North Portugal, this year’s edition encompasses an exhibit, an evening of storytelling and a conference, to take place on March 22nd and 23rd.
It’s an event promoted by Associação Xarabanda, with numerous sponsors, both public and private, being integrated into the “Brincos de Pontas” project.
The goal is to promote the immaterial cultural heritage, and preserve collective identities through the maintenance of ancient practices that don’t exist anywhere else in Madeira, namely the “Serrada da Velha”, the Gongorra game and Pife playing.
The idea “is to presnt a number of ancestral practices (…) which were brought to the island by the first inhabitants of Ponta Delgada – the serttling of the area started in the 15th century – brought from the North of Portugal, where various villages still keep the practice of the “Serrada da Velha”.
On March 22nd, at 19h, there’s the opening of the exhibit “Serrada da Velha – twenty years of memories”, at the Centro Comunitário da Primeira Lombada (open until April 07th), followed by the recreation of the Serrada da Velha tradition by the local community. To close the evening, there’s to be a convivial “panelo” (stew) and a musical show by traditional music group “Cantares cá de dentro”. The following day, also at 19h, there’s to be a briefing/conversation by Lidia Goes Ferreira, sollowed by an evening of storytelling, by Margarida Meneses.
