The Monte toboggan drivers will be getting a new “home”. This was one of the conclusions of the meeting that took place last summer, when the town’s executive promised the Associação de Carreiros do Monte a new centre to support its activities. This space is to have shower rooms, lockers, a kitchen and a social area, thus giving answer to long voiced requests for better working conditions.
Presently, the Carreiros only have a small warehouse, cede by the Funchal diocese, and where they only have quite ancient lockers. The council has been able to avail them this new solution, requalifying the building where there are presently the public toilets of the area, next to the starting point of the descents.
The vice president of the council, Idalina Perestrelo, visited the premises, and gave the good news to the Associação, adding that besides granting them the space the council will also rehabilitate the structure: the ground floor is to retain its use as public toilets, but the first floor will go through more dramatic changes, passing entirely into the hands of the Carreiros’ association. This means an investment of some 30 thousand euro, and building is to start in the coming weeks.
