The Funchal council promotes, on May 11th and 12th, an international conference as part of the “smart cities” project, and especially focused on issues like tourism and regional development. The event was entitled “Smart Funchal 2017”, and is to gather the active forces of the council (associations, companies and citizens) to think and discuss “smart cities”, with over twenty Portuguese and foreign specialists.

Paulo Cafofo, the Funchal mayor, states that the effort is made to prepare the city to new challenges and modern times, since smart cities aren’t just a catchphrase, an have become a reality. According to the mayor, “we have to learn to make use of emerging technologies to promote the city as a tourist destination, giving added value to the destination”.

The aim of the conference is to profoundly know the tourist market in which Funchal exists, knowing what our visitor need, what experiences and options they exercise, and how satisfied they are when they leave. To this effect, the council will gather a number of Portuguese and foreign specialists, who, with local citizens and operators, will be able to disseminate good examples and case studies, develop ideas and design strategies for Funchal as part of an intelligent tourism environment. “We have to be open the future, and the future is smart cities”, stated Paulo Cafofo.
