The Funchal council, and especially the parish of São Martinho have reason to celebrate. The civil parish, headed by Duarte Caldeira Ferreira, got a special present: they are now part of a very restricted club, the civil parishes that are to receive the Ecoparishes XXI prize, awarded by the European Blue Flag Association.
The national recognition has as a goal to incentivise and prize the parishes that work towards sustainability and the development of their communities, with special emphasis being given to all initiatives towards the environment, citizenship, participation and inclusion.
It took the promotion of various initiatives for the parish to see its efforts recognized, especially oriented towards a better community life: the elimination of herbicides from cleaning activities, better energy management in the building where the administration is placed, training actions for the community in the environmental area, the use of electronic support to avoid the generation and use of more paper, as well as the reorganization of gardens, its cleaning and maintenance, and all actions developed in the areas of democratic participation, as is the case of the “Participated Budget”, now in its second edition.
The separation of urban waste, in strict cooperation with the Funchal council, namely in its reuse and better placing of eco points, were an added value. The fact that almost all schools in the council have a eco-schools banner was also considered a positive achievement.
The prize is to be awarded next March 24th, at the Torres Vedras Green Fest, with both the president of the civil parish, Duarte Caldeira, and its assembly president, Thomas Dellinger, being present.
